In Georgia, the project has focused on strengthening the country's policy framework for wastewater management. Working closely with government counterparts, the team completed a comprehensive assessment of national legislation against the revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and identified priority legal reforms needed to support future implementation.

Alongside the legal review, experts developed a methodology to identify wastewater pollution hotspots and advanced work on a national Wastewater Management Concept, implementation roadmap and investment recommendations. These findings and proposed measures were presented and discussed with national stakeholders during the National Validation Workshop in October 2026.

The BBSEA National Validation Workshop was held on 12 October 2026 in Tbilisi, Georgia, in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (RECC). The workshop brought together representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA), technical experts and national stakeholders to review proposed legal and policy recommendations for strengthening wastewater management.

Discussions focused on aligning Georgia's national legislation with the revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, reviewing the proposed Wastewater Management Concept and policy implementation roadmap, and examining preliminary findings on pollution hotspots and priority investments in the Black Sea Basin.

The workshop marked an important step towards finalizing evidence-based policy and investment recommendations to support Georgia's efforts to reduce pollution entering the Black Sea.
